Setup your KeepKey

Follow these steps to get your hardware wallet up and running in minutes.

Step 1Download the Desktop App

  • →Select the appropriate download for your OS.
  • →Linux: update your udev rules to enable USB access.
  • →Linux: you may need to chmod the downloaded file before running.
  • →Windows: you may need to proceed past unsigned download warnings.

Step 2Unbox your device

  • →Prepare paper for writing down your recovery phrase before powering on.

Step 3Connect your KeepKey

  • →Plug the device into your computer via USB.

Step 4Enter Updater Mode

  • →Unplug the device.
  • →Hold down the button on the KeepKey.
  • →Plug the device back in while holding the button.

Step 5Update the Bootloader

  • →Do NOT unplug your KeepKey while uploading.
  • →You will be prompted to unplug and reconnect at the right time.
  • →Follow on-device prompts — do not disconnect until instructed.

Step 6Update Firmware

  • →The latest firmware is required to use the platform.

Step 7Create your Wallet

  • →Generate a new mnemonic recovery phrase on the device.

Step 8(Optional) Restore from Recovery Phrase

  • →A cipher is used to enter text via keyboard — the device will guide you.
  • →Never enter your recovery phrase in any app without a cipher.
  • →Any app asking for your phrase without a cipher is a scam.
